On Saturday June 17, 2017 Families Against The Heroin Epidemic Rally in Stark (F.A.T.H.E.R.S.) will be holding their 3rd annual motorcycle run and community event to raise awareness of the heroin crisis in our community and support for efforts to combat it. The F.A.T.H.E.R.S. organization is again partnering with CommQuest (commquest.org), Stark County Sheriff George Maier, local police departments, area mayors and other municipal leaders to promote this sober event.
F.A.T.H.E.R.S. was founded by the parents of an addict. Their personal experience with the harrowing consequences of heroin addiction has led them to speak out about the problem. Heroin not only destroys the lives of addicts, it also destroys families and communities. There are social and economic costs to all of us in the forms of crime, disease, degradation of neighborhoods, loss of life and individual potential, and the drain on public services and resources. Heroin’s victims are not strangers. They are someone’s child, neighbor, friend or relative. The F.A.T.H.E.R.S. mission is to end the silence and shame inherent to the disease of addiction and to combat the heroin epidemic by raising awareness, funding and support for law enforcement, treatment, and education efforts in our communities. Proceeds from last year’s event funded the purchase of 5 permanent Heroin Awareness Signs and the creation of starkheroinepidemic.org a complete addiction resource website for our county. F.A.T.H.E.R.S. looks to do more in 2017 with the proceeds. The 2017 event are projected to fund symposiums to educate health care workers and community members about the disease aspect of addiction & the detrimental effects that stigma can have for addicts and families seeking care. To put it into perspective the heroin epidemic ranges in color, age and economic background and killed more people in 2016 in the U.S. than those who were killed in the Vietnam War. The heroin crisis, per the New York Times, is killing almost as many Americans as the AIDS crisis did at its height.
